ISO 22000 Certification

ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System Certification

Food safety is not something you can afford to get wrong. One contaminated batch, one failed inspection, one border rejection, and the damage to your business can take years to repair. That is exactly why ISO 22000 exists, and exactly why getting independently certified matters.

NORMEIRA is an accredited certification body operating across the GCC and Pakistan. We audit food safety management systems and issue ISO 22000 certificates to organizations that meet the standard. We are not consultants. Our role is to independently assess your food safety management system and certify it, giving your certificate the credibility that buyers, regulators, and trading partners across global markets genuinely recognize and trust.

What Is ISO 22000?- Ensure Food Safety

ISO 22000 is the internationally recognized standard for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS). It sets out the requirements any organization in the food chain must meet to consistently identify, prevent, and control food safety hazards. Unlike HACCP, which focuses on production-level hazard control, ISO 22000 takes a broader, organization-wide approach. It integrates HACCP principles with the management framework of ISO 9001 and internationally recognized Prerequisite Programs (PRPs), covering the entire organization from leadership and policy down to operational controls and continual improvement. The current version is ISO 22000:2018, built on the High Level Structure (HLS) that makes it fully integrable with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.

Who Needs ISO 22000 Certification?

ISO 22000 applies to any organization in the food chain, regardless of size, including food manufacturers and processors across meat, dairy, seafood, bakery, beverages, and ready-to-eat products, agricultural producers, food packaging manufacturers, cold chain and logistics operators, and food importers and exporters.

For businesses operating in or exporting to the GCC, ISO 22000 certification is either mandated by regulators such as Saudi SFDA and UAE ESMA or required by major retail chains and food importers. In Pakistan, the PSQCA and international buyers increasingly require ISO 22000 as a prerequisite for supply agreements, particularly for export-oriented food manufacturers.

Key Benefits of ISO 22000 Certification

  • Certification proves your food safety system is structured, documented, and independently verified, building real confidence among buyers, retailers, regulators, and consumers.
  • It reduces the risk of product recalls, regulatory fines, and border rejections, helping keep your products off the WHO's statistic of 600 million annual foodborne illness cases.
  • ISO 22000 provides a systematic framework to proactively identify and control food safety hazards across your entire operation.
  • Certification opens international markets, as major retailers and distributors in the GCC and globally require it as a minimum supplier qualification.
  • Internally, certified organizations report a stronger food safety culture, better monitoring discipline, and reduced operational waste.

ISO 22000 Certification Process

As an accredited certification body, we follow a structured, internationally aligned audit process:

Application and Document Review: Your organization submits a certification application along with your Food Safety Policy, Hazard Control Plan, FSMS Manual, OPRP, and CCP procedures, and internal audit records. Our auditors review these to assess readiness for the on-site audit.
Stage 1 Audit (System Readiness Review): Our auditor visits your facility to review your FSMS in the context of your actual operating environment, assess your understanding of ISO 22000 requirements, and confirm readiness for the full certification audit.
Stage 2 Audit (Certification Audit): Our qualified auditor independently assesses whether your food safety management system is fully implemented, operational, and effective across the entire certification scope. Any nonconformities are formally documented.
Corrective Action and Certification Decision: Your organization submits evidence of corrective actions. Our certification committee independently reviews findings and, if your system meets ISO 22000:2018 requirements, we issue your official certificate.
Surveillance Audits and Recertification: Certification is valid for three years with annual surveillance audits. A full recertification audit is conducted at the end of the three-year cycle.

ISO 22000 vs HACCP — Which Does Your Business Need?

HACCP is a process-specific hazard management tool focused on controlling biological, chemical, and physical hazards within production. ISO 22000 encompasses HACCP and goes further, building those principles into a complete organization-wide management system that also covers leadership, communication, traceability, performance evaluation, and continual improvement. Many food businesses in the GCC and Pakistan begin with HACCP and progress to ISO 22000 as their markets grow.
